CHAMBER NOTES
In supporting this initial edition of Boolaroo Bulletin the Boolaroo-Speers Point Chamber of Commerce wishes all readers the compliments of the season and a bright and prosperous New Year.
Boolaroo Bulletin is an initiative that deserves support from local business operators and in turn from residents who are encouraged to shop locally and see what Boolaroo and Speers Point has to offer.
In other news, Boolaroo celebrates its 100th year in 1998 and the Chamber is planning a calendar of activites which revolve on major events in April and November - more on that in the New Year.
A final word of thanks to Westlakes Printers who printed our new letterheads and membership certificate as part of their contribution to the local area. Well done!
Drive safely in the festive season - but also take a walk to your local shops.

TALKING ABOUT TOWN! - "ATMS VS SERVICE"
ONE fact evolved from researching Boolaroo's Business History since Mr T. Frith established the first shop (a grocery store in Main Road in 1898) is when Boolaroo's Banks "left town",it left many citizens no option but to drive or catch a bus to do "their banking" out-of-town. It has certainly left a trail of business going out of Boolaroo. The first bank (Bank of NSW) opened in Boolaroo in July 1937. If you are super busy, balance a career with parenting, frequently I keep a constant alert when driving through towns like Boolaroo, for an easy park and a bright coloured ATM machine. It enables the user to extract cash to buy your lunch or pop in quickly to shop at Festival, (which is one of the few supermarkets around where you can actually nearly park inside the front door, you don't loose your wobbly trolley load down a ramp; or have to push it through a maze of cars on many confusing levels, wasting time looking for your car (for some they don't find it at all due to reported car thieves who prey on unsuspecting victims). If you only have time to push the ATM buttons then for those it is a blessing. For our older society who were brought up without technology or a computer age; they too like everyone else do prefer to have a conversation with a friendly smiling face, or to make an appointment to discuss future plans, a business set-up loan or small loan for renovating the home or buying a first car etc. With plans to set up the Small Business Enterprise Centre somewhere in the lake Macquarie area and new businesses looking for venues - it would install faith for the future of Boolaroo - even if a Credit Union or Bank set up 1 day a week to assist those who happen to enjoy the luxury of "walking into Boolaroo to do "the banking"!!!!!!

WELCOME TO BOOLAROO -
EDNA & JOHN FAIRWEATHER, "ORCHARDS & THINGS"
ORCHARDS & Things opened for trading on Sunday, 9 November at their Shop/Residence at 47 Main Road. Edna & John have operated Orchards & Things for over 5 years, moving out of Jewellstown Plaza, they have been extremely happy with their decision to relocate to Boolaroo and invite new customers to see the wonderful selection of gift ideas for Christmas. Edna is thrilled and happy to be working in her new environment and on Opening Day, there were lots of customers who have repeated their business since the Fair. The response to the Boolaroo Family Fair was excellent and both Edna and John were very happy with the success of the day. Call in and make them feel welcome and take the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping.
LAKE MACQUARIE SMALL BUSINESS CENTRE
- could this be fresh hope for the Township of Boolaroo??
THERE is now a Board of Directors for a Small Business Centre who are looking for a site to be established in Lake Macquarie, with a proposal to "set up shop" in Boolaroo. Thc mission statement of the Centre is to "Create a supportive environment that fosters initiatives for new and expanding small business enterprises to achieve job growth and prosperity. Mr Neville Sawyer, CEO Ampcontrol, thc Centre's Chairman, said "The Centre's objectives are to reduce business failure, create employment, assist local economic development by developing and operating a business incubator in Lake Macquarie and to target existing small business or unemployed people with a viable business idea."
He added it has to be a Centre where "business comes together" with an Advisory and Business Mentoring Services.
From the Editor: This Centre would certainly be well patronised due to that growing trend of people who decide to go into business; the disturbing high rate of unemployment in the Hunter, on-going effects of rejection that our youth and unemployed workers have to overcome and struggle. Together with increasing high costs of living and escalating rentals & mortgage repayments. All we have to wait for is the funding to be sourced, the venue to be selected for this Centre and for the project to be in. Well Done - a step in the right direction for our future & Business Sector!
"RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY"
Written by Keith Powell, Manager, Public Affairs - Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.
ORGANISERS of the Pasminco sponsored Boolaroo Family Fair had their fingers crossed when rain showers swept across the suburb before the start of the Festival. The early morning showers eventually disappeared which ensured a large crowd visited Boolaroo's Main street to the relief of the organisers. Pasminco was one of the major exhibitors at the Fair and gave away about 5,500 trees during the day to local residents and visitors. Pasminco representatives, Rod Klages, Paul Kekevski, Phil and Alex Wilson, Kathy and Mark Fitzpatrick, Rob Montgomery and Helen Croker assisted on the Pasminco stand during the day to discuss our operation and also explain the benefits of our environmental strategies, especially the mound proposed for construction on the Southern boundary of the smelter. Organisers of the Fair, Boolaroo/Speers Point Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said they were pleased with the crowds and the entertainment fo the day. The group is already planning next year's event which will celebrate Boolaroo's 100th anniversary.

"LAKE LIFE"
Throughout the coming issues of the Boolaroo Bulletin, there will be reports on Lake Macquarie, - our greatest natural resource "Australia's largest Coastal Lake". On-going Community support together with Government agencies who are responsible for the Lake are working together on a Lake Macquarie City Council facilitated "Estuary Management Plan". Runoff from urban stormwater drains are the Lake's greatest threat, turning sediment & nutrients into "algal blooms". Nutrients are from detergents from washing cars on cement, over fertilised lawns, pet droppings not disposed properly; all which compound and create problems. There are many small yet effective ways to reduce on-going damage, simple hints eg. wash your car on the grass - nature's natural filter system. Bury pet droppings. There are so many activities both Commercial and Recreational that rely on Lake Macquarie - to promote our City's theme "a quality lifestyle" everyone needs to stop and think of the future, to nurture and care for improvements to our beautiful Lake Macquarie".

"JOEY" (G); MOVIE RELEASE: ROADSHOW FILM DISTRIBUTORS
JOEY is an inspirational tale of an Australian boy's tireless quest to reunite a baby kangaroo with its kidnapped parents. To do so, Billy Macgregor (JAMIE CROFT) must leave his country home, his beautiful widowed mother (REBECCA GlBNEY) and with Joey snug in his backpack, travel alone to the dangerous city. There he teams up with Linda (ALEX McKENNA), the newly arrived Ambassador's daughter, who is hungry for adventure and eager to help Billy & Joey's plight. As the frantic parents search for their missing children, Billy & Linda's adventures bring them into contact with the dark underbelly of Sydney and it's evil inhabitants, including the sinister Kanga-Catcher (HAROLD HOPKINS), a hard, mean man with no place in his heart for kangaroos. Helped by an eccentric street woman (RUTH CRACKNELL), a major TV network and a rookie TV news team, the adventure ends with Joey reunited with his parents; Billy has a special friend in Linda; the U.S. Ambassador (ED BEGLEY JR) looks at Billy's mother with a Gleam in his eye and she enjoys the attention; the baddies are captured; the street woman turns out to be a rich animal activist and the rookie TV crew receive their own prime time news show! Everyone celebrates back at the MacCregor Farm. " A WONDERFUL, FILM FOR ALL AGES!

THE Boolaroo Bulletin is a small business initiative stemming from an idea, a few inspiring spoken words, a meetinfg or two, a couple of drafts, newspaper / marketing experience with the ultimate desire to produce a product. Combine it all by setting out to achieve a goal. This project is intended to be a test vehicle with this first Summer issue, with plans for a bi-monthly Centenary Newsletter throughout the Centenary Celebrations of 1998. Many Thanks to all Advertising supporters who quickly approved this project, The Boolaroo Speers Point Chamber of Commerce for their endorsement, Karen Morris of KARMIC Graffix, Westlakes Printers, Keith Powell, Carol Springall & Paul Bee for their encouraging support.
