CHAMBER NOTES
The Chamber is proud to announce the appointment of Jenny Barrie as its new, part time Marketing Coordinator. Jenny took up the position at our May meeting and I'm happy to say is bringing with her a sound knowledge of the Boolaroo and Speers Point areas.
Jenny has been putting together the "Boolaroo Bulletin" and also organised the very successful Childrens Festival in Speers Point Park in early April while assisting with the Easter promotion in Boolaroo. Many of you already will know Jenny because of her work in the Boolaroo and Speers Point areas and what we are hoping to achieve is a dove-tail of her existing work with the duties of Marketing Coordinator. Jenny has put a number of ideas before the Chamber, one of which is working towards the Centenary Boolaroo Fair in November. Jenny's duties include assisting the Chamber in its endeavours to market the Boolaroo and Speers Point commercial areas, increasing the membership of the Chamber and working in liaison with the Chamber and the Lake Macquarie City Council on the implementation of the Boolaroo Main Street Study among other duties. Jenny is already out and about and I hope all businesses give her a warm welcome when she comes knocking on the door.
Until next time, good shopping!

Kerry Freer
President

KEEP FOOTPATHS CLEAR!
REPORTS of youths carelessly using footpaths for skateboard thrillseeking as well as cyclists upsetting traders and putting senior citizens and residents at risk from both colliding. Who is responsible? Does this require more police presence? Is there not enough Youth Facilities in the area - would the costly building of a skateboard ramp still inhibit skateboard riders from using pedestrian access which is supposed to be safe? Bored restless youths? Busy parents? Is local and State Government attention needed for youth initiatives? Would you like to comment?
Please write to PO. Box 761 Warners Bay NSW 2282 - Boolaroo Bulletin. Let's try to get together and work towards an improved community and future for youth in Lake Macquarie.

STOP VANDALISM
WHY do people deface buildings and shopfronts with graffiti? I am sure that when vandals do grow up and possibly own a business one day that they will understand the damage caused and the cost of time and effort that is needed to clean up the mess. One retailer in Boolaroo has had paint scraped off their shopfront which will be costly to repair.
In a Centenary Year - with the importance of the Main Street Study in with Lake Macquarie City Council funding is being sourced to implement improvements to lighting, and basically tidying up the town and business and land owner/landlords to be encouraged to freshen up their place by painting in heritage colours - why go to all this effort if rebels without a cause are left to dishearten those concerned.

PARKING IN MAIN ROAD
Retailers and employees - don't forget if you park in front of businesses, a potential client may drive past. The convenience of parking in front of where you shop is a real bonus in Boolaroo, if business owners or staff are parked an opportunity to "do some business" may pass you by! A two minute walk to off street parking may hear those cash registers "tinging" more frequently - it is worth a try!

"BIG" BIDS FAREWELL
The Boolaroo Improvement Group formed approximately 6 years ago from interested community members who were tired of adverse publicity from the "lead issues" in Boolaroo. The money was raised from townspeople and local businesses who donated funds together with fund-raising from BBQs, sausage sizzles, etc. BIG will be part of Boolaroo's history. "Ladies of the town" applied for grants, the Government did not support this as it was not budgeted to improve the look. With local Council's guidance planter boxes and seats were placed in Boolaroo and maintenance was kept up. The Boolaroo Chamber of Commerce was established and due to its management of the Boolaroo Family Fair and other improvement issues BIG has recently disbanded. Originally BIG focussed on improving community morale with their own efforts to basically have a local PR group - well done to all involved.

SAY HELLO
How nice it is to go into a strange place and be greeted with a smile and a friendly "Good-day". Boolaroo should be such a place, with understanding people, sympathetic to life and it's problems for us all. So when you see a stranger in our town, give the visitor a cheery greeting. It costs nothing, usually draws a friendly response and helps make the day a little easier for all concerned. Don't forget - visitors can spend if they spot an attractive item.

LAKE MACQUARIE CHILDRENS FESTIVAL REVIEW
A BIG thank-you to Pasminco, the Festival's major sponsor and many other local businesses who supported the 1998 Lake Macquarie Childrens Festival with donations and products. Over $1600 for The John Hunter Childrens Hospital & The Royal Institute for Deaf & Blind Children was raised and many families had a great day out. Children were spotted on camels, coach rides, mini cars and the entertainment was fantastic, Miss Kim and NBN's Big Dog and Rowdy Rabbit were there too. The sun shined all day and young Melissa Broadbent from Speers Point Primary School sang beautifully our National Anthem to open the event. Thank-you to Lake Macquarie City Council who donated a Stage and Speers Point Park and to Jillian Beswick for all your assistance throughout the planning stages leading up to the event and other LMCC staff who also assisted. Great snags were enjoyed courtesy of Boolaroo Butchery (the sausage sizzle raised $600! an exercise in fund-raising from students of Passmore's Business College) wonderful & safe advice from Micheal at HCB Electrics and fantastic prizes from Orchids & Things! Special thanks to Karen Morris at KARMIC GRAFFIX, the team at WESTLAKES PRINTERS and to Kent Robertson for your efforts, Helen Croker & Keith Powell at Pasminco for support and assistance prior to the event and to local "event riggers" Kris from Speers Point, and my own team of special helpers the day went smoothly! If it was not for "friends" - events of any kind - big or small could never get off the ground! Jenny Barrie-Event Co-ordinator.
