(1930) Newcastle Beach. The large building in middle left is the Newcastle Hospital. Behind it on waterfront is the custom's House with clock tower and 1o'clock time ball above.
In the days before radio time signals, ships' masters in port checked their chronometers with the time ball, which could be seen all over the harbour. A little before 10 o'clock each day the ball was hoisted to the top of the spire (which pierced its axis). At 1 o'clock exactly the ball dropped.
