Railway bridge over Cockle Creek (compact)

This picture shows the view north along Cockle Creek. In the distance can be seen the railway bridge supporting the main line between Newcastle and Sydney. A closer look at the picture reveals a freight train as it rattles across.
The accoustic properties of the bridge's location are interesting in that even from this distance the sound of the train's movement over the bridge is remarkably clear and free from interference. To the North, on the far side of the bridge, it has been observed that while the sound does not travel far past a line of low hills and other obstacles, on some cold winter mornings the sound can be heard loud and crystal-clear from the low-lying land beyond those same hills.
On the Western side of the creek can be found swamps and a number of historical landmarks, including the old racecourse and site of an electrical powerstation and spillway used by some coal mines in the first half of the century.
